Into the depths of Scorpio: mystery, desire, and rebirth

Scorpio is, par excellence, the sign of mystery, not because its energy denies us access, but because the personality fears looking deeply into itself.

Scorpio is a water sign, like Cancer and Pisces; what distinguishes it from its two sister signs is that it belongs to the fixed modality.

As we know, cardinal signs tend to be pioneers, while mutable signs are characterized by their ability to adapt to their surroundings. Fixed signs, however, tend to show strong resistance to change, defending their positions with loyalty and conviction, a trait that can sometimes manifest as stubbornness.

In humanistic astrology, each sign is assigned a key phrase intended to encapsulate the entirety of its energy. For Scorpio, that phrase is: “I desire.”

The three states: scorpion, eagle, and phoenix

While the energy of Scorpio is famously intimidating and mysterious, the sign is much more than that.

In its symbology, Scorpio is unique in that it is associated with three distinct states of being. The first, and most well-known, is the scorpion, representing the most primitive way of engaging with this energy. In this stage, a Scorpio may be resentful, jealous, or even vengeful (sometimes even toward their own family), though they eventually learn that the venom they use to strike is also toxic to themselves. The second state is the eagle, reflecting how this energy can lift itself from the ground to become a high-flying bird, detaching from the earthly realm to observe everything from the perspective of the soul. The third is the phoenix; this represents the pinnacle of emotional growth for Scorpio, a moment of metamorphosis where darkness and pain serve as fuel for internal and external transformation.

Even if your Sun is not in Scorpio, you may still have other personal or generational planets with this energy. In humanistic astrology, working with this energy involves identifying the areas of your life where you might still be operating from a “scorpion” state, lashing out or causing harm to others. The goal is to recognize where you have the potential to rise above the earthly realm, like an eagle, and deeply integrate your lessons, reaching the pinnacle of internal transformation and being reborn like a phoenix.

Scorpio and the 8th House

Discussing Scorpio also brings us to the 8th House: the house of shared resources, family secrets, profound intimacy, and both emotional and financial inheritances. The sign occupying this house at the moment of your birth is determined by your Ascendant (or Rising sign), which marks the 1st House and sets the energy for your individual journey through each astrological house. Therefore, even if both you and a friend have your Sun in Scorpio, your experiences will differ, as the Moon and the Ascendant play a crucial role in how these energies manifest in your respective charts.

Pluto and Mars: Scorpio’s rulers

Finally, Scorpio is ruled in modern astrology by Pluto, a planet associated with profound change, the death of the ego, and the rebirth of a new, improved personality. In astrology, the gift of confronting the placement of Pluto in one’s natal chart is known as “Minerva.” It is one of the most rewarding experiences, as the transformation is internal, shifting how you process life, rather than focusing on how you appear to others.

Scorpio is also ruled in traditional astrology by Mars, a planet linked to animal instincts, action, conflict, and our most primal, carnal impulses. This is why, much like Aries, Scorpio is often associated with romantic affairs and betrayals. In medical astrology, Scorpio governs the genitals in the human body, which instantly links it to the process of creation.
