The Sun and the Hero's Journey: your life purpose in humanistic astrology
Are you trapped in your Moon or shining from your Sun?
In humanistic astrology, we focus on the energy of the sign and the planet it occupies to interpret how a person’s lived experience manifests across different areas of life.
Understanding the specific function of each planetary position can be challenging; however, myths, legends, and stories exist to precisely illustrate how this energy operates within your birth chart. Here, I explain the function of the Sun.
To understand it systematically, we will use the “Hero’s Journey” framework proposed by mythologist Joseph Campbell.
The Hero’s Journey is an archetypal structure found in the myths, legends, and great stories of humanity. It represents a psychological map of human transformation and, in humanistic astrology, speaks to the function of the Sun in relation to the Moon and the Ascendant.
The Hero’s Journey is summarized in three major acts:
1. The Departure (leaving the comfort zone)
At this stage, the hero exists in their ordinary world until receiving a call to adventure (which might manifest as a crisis or a desire for change in the real world), though they often initially reject it out of fear. Eventually, the hero finds a mentor and crosses the first threshold into the unknown. In astrology, the ordinary world is represented by the Moon: it reflects childhood, emotional attachment, and repetitive behavioral patterns that hinder psychological evolution.
2. The Initiation (trials and challenges)
Upon leaving their comfort zone (the Moon), the hero begins to face challenges and encounter both allies and enemies. This stage culminates in the odyssey—or descent into the abyss—where the hero must confront their greatest fear (their shadow) and symbolically “rebirth” with a new level of consciousness. In astrology, this is the work of the Ascendant: activating its energy is the call to step out of lunar security and embark on the Sun’s adventure.
3. The Return (integration)
After overcoming the trial and obtaining the “elixir” (wisdom, maturity, gifts), the hero returns to the ordinary world, yet is no longer the same person; they now use what they have learned to heal or transform their surroundings. This act is associated with the Sun. Your Sun is not simply “your sign” or “who you already are”; your Sun is the goal. Carl Jung called this individuation: the journey of discovering who you truly are, beyond the expectations of your parents or society.
Fully knowing yourself requires endless lessons and trials—processes where you will likely make mistakes at first. More importantly, however, it teaches you to develop self-confidence, making it harder for others to manipulate you because you begin to recognize and uphold your own boundaries.
Recognizing your own inner light is necessary to recognize the light in others without wanting to dim it. That is what the Sun’s energy is about in humanistic astrology: kindling our own light in such a way that those around us find theirs.
While classical astrology views the Sun as representing a person’s basic essence, their behaviors, and how they pursue their goals, humanistic astrology associates the Sun with a psychic and psychological depth that unfolds as a life purpose.
The Hero’s Journey through Gemini
The hero’s journey expressed through an energy like Gemini’s, for instance, speaks of a personality whose solar drive seeks to explore the realm of intellect and communication. However, the challenge arises when that person lacks control over their environment or must delve into emotional territory. Gemini energy is intensely focused on the mind, interaction, and logic; consequently, finding itself in a deeply emotional environment presents a greater challenge than it might have anticipated.
Gemini is also often noted for a certain emotional distance or detachment: one day it may express a feeling, only to process it in a purely rational way the next. It is in these moments that humanistic astrology serves as a psychological tool to alchemize what we do not yet know how to integrate.
The Hero’s Journey is one of many myths and legends that exist to provide a coherent explanation of psychological growth and the potential energetic evolution of the psyche.
So, the next time you think your Sun merely reflects “who you are,” remember that the Sun is actually the torch guiding us through our darkest moments; it provides the warmth and vitality needed to achieve our goals and helps strengthen the boundaries of our psyche—all to the end of realizing our heart’s desires in a healthy way.
